Responsibilities

Under the day to day supervision of the Facilities Tradesperson and the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the incumbent is required to operate and maintain boilers at various locations and perform maintenance and repairs as well as assist in conducting a preventative maintenance program for all City facilities.  These facilities include City Hall, Fire Hall, the Multiplex, Yellowknife Community Arena, Solid Waste Facility, District Heating System, Fieldhouse, Wildcat, Ruth Inch Memorial Pool and other City buildings as may be required.  These duties include, but are not limited to, the maintenance of the heating/cooling systems at these facilities, making general repairs and adjusting settings as required.  This position may involve being on standby and working shifts.

Qualifications

The work requires a Class 5 Operating Engineer Certificate and a valid NWT Class 5 driver’s license.  It is important to have the experience of working on a variety of boilers, as well as training and experience in the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, compressor generators and other related equipment, which is often gained with experience in one of the trades such as Millwright or Plumber/Gasfitter. In order to provide a good preventative maintenance program, the incumbent must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

 

  • troubleshooting and decision-making skills in relation to equipment;
  • ability to act independently within authority limits of the position;
  • willingness to work with other staff;
  • ability to maintain a preventive maintenance schedule in conjunction with the Facilities

 

The City of Yellowknife offers a competitive salary range of $75,447 - $92,545 and as well as a comprehensive benefits package including monthly housing and vacation travel allowances and a defined benefit pension plan.
