EDGE YK magazine is a free publication dedicated to showcasing some of the vast
creative talent within Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. We’re interested in well‐
told first‐person narrative stories, as well as pieces on the issues, ideas and
people affecting the city’s past, present and future.
Published in print and online, six times per year, in February, April, June, August,
October and December, the magazine is written almost entirely by freelancers,
and we give bylines. We love first‐time writers, especially those who live (or have
lived) here, and we’re excited to help you tell your story to our dedicated
audience of roughly 20,000 readers.
Your story doesn’t have to be unique to Yellowknife, but it does need a genuine
connection to the city that creatively reflects local culture. No stories about
stereotypical northern topics of aurora borealis and dog sledding, please. If you
want to write about these things, you’ll have to do so in a way that interests
readers who’ve seen these themes many times before. We want articles reflecting
the Yellowknife of today, but we’re always interested in rarely told historical
stories with archival photos.
Length: We publish stories of a variety of lengths, but usually no longer than
Categories: EDGE YK is almost entirely non‐fiction features, first‐person essays,
opinion columns and photo essays, as well as recipes that feature at least one
local ingredient. Occasionally we consider poetry, but rarely will we publish
fiction. We also love photos and original local artwork of just about any sort, and
we sometimes commission artwork to accompany stories.

with your ideas, though we will, at times, accept ideas closer to the issue’s
release. Also, visit edgeyk.ca to flip through our online editions before pitching.

EDGE YK’s freelance contributors give the magazine its unique personality, and
we’re thankful for everyone who helps us do what we do. This is a guide to what
we pay for particular lengths, styles and genres of work.
The magazine buys print and online rights to the work for two months after
publication. After two months, the creator can sell or publish the work wherever
they wish. We pay on publication, but only after receiving an invoice.
Higher rates can sometimes be negotiated. We’re on a tight budget, but if you’re
honest about what you need, we’ll be honest about whether we can afford it.
If you aren’t sure where your idea might fit, start by sending a few lines to
firstname.lastname@example.org. We meet monthly to discuss content for upcoming issues, and
we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
