In this workshop we will examine pathways upwards using spiral movement patterns. Mark Young bridges spiraling exercises from Tai Chi to Steve Paxton’s Material For the Spine and then applying those exercises to the duet form of Contact Improvisation. We will explore ease of movement with our partners finding the effortless pathways upwards. Any lifting in Contact Improvisation should happen organically without effort or taking control from our partner. Contact Improv is a dance form in which both partners co-create, working together, listening to each other. Although suitable to people new to dance, participants should be fit and free from injuries. Aerials are optional, available to those who wish to study at that level with modifications for those who are not yet confident.
Mark Young is the director for Leviathan Studio on Lasqueti Island, British Columbia. He began dancing after a traumatic injury as a method of rehabilitation. Early in his rehab, several doctors said, “Keep doing whatever it is you are doing. You have recovered far beyond anyone’s realistic expectations.” At that time, he committed all of his resources to the development of a dance studio committed to the study of Contact Improvisation. He recently returned from Spain where he was invited to teach in several conservatories of dance and universities and where he will return next year for a longer teaching tour.
