Compensation: $26-$28/hr - based on experience

The 4Y Program is designed to meet the needs of children and youth in Yellowknife, N’Dilo, and Dettah, between the ages of 12 and 29, who have a disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and for those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The program is trauma-informed and facilitated by a ‘navigator’. It includes arts, music, culture, life skills, and physical education components. Youth are involved in one-to-one sessions every week, and occasionally join in group sessions with other program participants. Youth who have also been involved with the justice system in any way as an offender can join the program and receive additional support to ensure they avoid reoffending. The justice stream of this program is available to youth in all NWT communities.

PAE and FASD are associated with a number of cognitive, learning, social, and emotional challenges. This can contribute to involvement in risky behaviour, including substance abuse, and can also contribute to poor mental health, depression, anxiety, and social isolation. It is extremely important for children and youth with FASD to have regular access to various supportive relationships, life-skills building opportunities, and a focus on proper diet and exercise.

The Justice Manager will work closely on a team with the 4Y Program Coordinator and the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure that youth in the program are getting the support that they need. The Justice Manager will focus on supporting the 4Y navigators who are working with youth who have been involved in the justice system by providing guidance and ideas on how to best support the youth. The Justice Manager will not be directly supervising navigators, but will be available for support when needed.

The Justice Manager will also be responsible for coordinating meetings with justice professionals throughout the territory, providing education to justice professionals and the community at large about how people with FASD experience justice, advocating for change within the justice system for people with FASD, and providing training to empower any person in the life of someone with FASD to be able to better support them. Travel to communities outside of Yellowknife will occur 1-2 times / year.
