Description

Camp Connections is located outside of Yellowknife, NWT (approximately 1 hour drive) up the Ingraham Trail along the northern shore of the Cameron River. The Camp site consists of wooden cabins, equipped with wood stoves and outhouses. Everything needed to run camp is brought in and taken out every summer. There is no running water, or electricity.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Under the direction and supervision of the Foster Family Coalitions Executive Director, the Camp Director will plan, organize, and implement dynamic sessions of 7- day camps. The sessions are designed to promote life skills that empower and motivate children and youth through on the land activities, traditional teachings, sports competitions, leadership games, team building games, as well as arts and crafts activities. The Camp Director supervises all staff and volunteers and maintains working relationship with all Elders and guests. The Camp Director is ultimately responsible for the safety of staff and campers, as well as their emotional and social wellbeing, and the overall success of Camp Connections.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demand:

  • Camp environment.
  • Office Work.
  • Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects during camp preparation, camp operation, and camp taking down.
  • Driving for 3 hours /day or less, providing services to the camp, and moving inside the camp from a location to another.
  • Facilities require ongoing maintenance and facilitating activities without electricity or running water becomes physically demanding at times.

Mental Demand:

  • Crisis response
  • After-hours response when required
  • Handling situations in which children or youth become violent or defiant.
  • Creative problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Ability to multi-task and manage all camp operations.

POSITION SECURITY

Responsibilities

DUTIES

Pre-Camp

  • Develops a multi-phase program with the Executive Director/President to include cultural activities, water sports, land games, wilderness activities, indoor activities, and ‘rainy-day-routines’
  • Ensure adequate supplies and equipment are bought or reserved for camp programming
  • Advertise and promote camp to social services and foster families across the NWT, manage camp registration, and follow up with social workers and foster parents for confirmation. This may require coordination of camp flights
  • Revise camp policies and procedures, ensure risk management plans, emergency and contingency plans are in place
  • Prepare and implement staff training includes coordinating guests and preparing all materials, as well as overseeing/implementing the training
  • Work with camp staff to ensure camp facility is ready to host campers. Includes: painting, repairs, cleaning, ensuring adequate supplies, and program materials, set up in an organized fashion
  • Establish a working relationship with foster parents, social workers, foster children, camp funders, guests, and other camp partners.
  • Host webinars and staff trainings for all Foster Family Coalition workers.
  • Prepare proposals by determining concept, gathering information, writing drafts, apply for funding, initiate fund raising, and obtaining approvals.
  • Identify current and prospective staffing requirements, coordinate with the Human Resources department to interview the candidates and decide for selection.
  • Prepares camp purchase orders by verifying specifications and price, obtaining recommendations from suppliers for substitute items.
  • Oversee the proper maintenance and work readiness for all camp properties and vehicles. This includes business vehicles at the city.
  • Collaborate with the facilitators to organize camp workshops.
  • Responsible for dealing with camp rent issues. setting the initial rent level tenants agree to. Ensuring optimal cash flow by setting a firm date for rent collection.

During Camp

  • Responsible for ensuring camp sessions are ran as planned, supporting staff, and using resources efficiently and effectively
  • Ensures all necessary safety precautions are taken while at the camp. This includes abiding by the regulations of Department of Health and Social Services and insurance standards, ensures all medical needs of children are met. This includes keeping medicine in a locked box and giving out medications at the right time, and ensure incident reports are being documented in an appropriate manner.
  • Monitors and maintains full inventory of all camp resources, purchasing orders as required and track orders ensuring adequate supplies are available at camp.
  • Keeping track of all invoices and receipts and forwards them to the Executive Director
  • Responsible to maintain camp supplies available during the camp time, this includes food shopping and water delivery to the camp.
  • Midsession review: conduct staff evaluations mid-way through summer, review evaluations with Executive Director/President
  • Cover for the camp staff when they leave for any reason.
  • Review and report staff timesheets to the Human Resources department
  • Oversee the financials and pay the facilitators, contractors, and other third parties involved according to the plan

After Camp

  • Manage camp takedown, includes loading all camp materials and transporting back to town for storage.
  • Arrange photos in album for camp memorabilia and mail out personal photos to campers along with letter
  • Write a final report for Camp Connections that consists of a summary for the camp goals, objectives, events, schedule, safety, security, camp pictures, evaluation, and financial.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • University Degree or Equivalent
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience in a camp atmosphere
  • 2– 5 years’ experience developing and implementing programs for children or youth (ideally in a camp atmosphere)
  • 1 – 3 years in a supervisory position (ideally in a camp atmosphere)
  • Experience working with children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and other physical and behavioral abilities
  • Good verbal communications skills, especially in conflict resolution, human resource management (mediation and related training an asset)
  • Ability to coordinate staff and maintain a safe camp atmosphere under various pressures.
  • Knowledge and respect for northern cultures
  • Ability to multitask and mange time
  • Experience in child welfare an asset
  • Up to date first aid certification
  • NSL certification an asset
  • Valid Driver’s license – Class 5 required, Class 4 Perfered
