Description

TAG Engineering is seeking a Junior Engineer or Technologist to join our multidisciplinary team of architects and engineers. Projects include small scale commercial work as well as mid to large scale educational, hospitality, and civic facilities. The successful candidate must have strong drafting capabilities and be able to work well in a team environment. Drafting work will primarily be related to electrical engineering, but may occasionally include mechanical engineering and architectural drawings. Other work will include design calculations, analysis, and sizing of equipment. The successful candidate will have some experience in the buildings design and construction field, and be expected to learn on the job under the direction of experienced engineers and architects.

Taylor Architecture Group (TAG) is a Northern based architecture firm with a focus on community design work, especially First Nation and Inuit communities, throughout the North. Our head office is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with satellite offices in Whitehorse and Ottawa.

In 2018, TAG expanded to include a mechanical and electrical engineering division with a focus on integrated design, coordination, energy efficiency and working for the best interests of our clients. Working in the electrical department, the successful candidate will provide drafting and design support to our team of experienced professionals, and will have the opportunity to learn under the guidance of professional engineers.

Whitehorse is a youthful and active Northern community. As the hub for the Yukon Territory, Whitehorse has most of the amenities of any Southern city. Residents enjoy skiing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling in the winter, and in summer enjoy the extended daylight hours with music festivals (currently postponed for Covid), hiking, canoeing, and camping in the wilderness that is Whitehorse’s backyard. Our office is located on the Yukon river with a view of the mountains beyond. Our location promotes a social, thoughtful, and diverse working environment.

Length of Contract:

This is a full time (37.5 hr/week), permanent position located in Whitehorse, Yukon. 

Moving Costs:

A moving expense stipend will be provided by TAG. Temporary housing is available upon arrival in Whitehorse until the candidate secures permanent housing.

COVID-19 Considerations:

The Yukon may require a period of self-isolation upon arrival in Whitehorse for anyone who is relocating here from outside the Yukon. If necessary, this will be completed with a remote work setup during the candidate’s isolation period.  Please identify with your application if you would be relocating from outside of the Yukon.

Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Work closely with TAG ME’s Engineering staff in Yellowknife, NT and Ottawa, ON

  • Act as electrical designer and site reviewer for TAG’s Whitehorse office

  • Provide electrical design and drafting, with support and collaboration with Yellowknife and Ottawa office engineering staff

  • Complete or assist in the completion of design reports, building or system assessment reports, and site review reports

  • Conduct site visits during construction, providing photos and site review reports satisfying the review requirements of various projects, and/or collecting information for design purposes

  • Prioritize time to manage the demands of multiple overlapping project deadlines

  • Lead and assist with production of electrical construction drawings

  • Coordinate with other disciplines including project managers, architects, interior designers, structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, contractors and other consultants

  • Provide design and drafting support remotely for project teams in Yellowknife, when needed

  • Work will include occasional travel to remote communities in the arctic and sub-arctic, candidate should be comfortable with travel in small airplanes.

Qualifications

Credentials and Skills:

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training with a provincial or territorial association, with eligibility to register with APEY. With the right experience, technicians or technologists will also be considered.

  • A minimum 3 years of experience is preferred, in Power and Distribution Systems, Power Generation, Lighting Design, Life Safety Systems, Low Voltage Controls, Communication and Audio-Visual Systems and Building Condition Assessments

  • Experience in working independently to manage deadlines and coordinate with team members

  • Skilled production of presentation & working drawings.

  • Working knowledge of applicable national building codes and standards, including National Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, National Energy Code for Buildings, as well as various CSA, CAN/ULC and IES codes and guidelines.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; fluent in written and spoken English.

  • Knowledge and comfort with AutoCAD, AGi32 Software, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office programs is required.

  • Familiarity and experience with Revit would be an asset.

  • Eligible to work in Canada

Most of our senior personnel are based in Yellowknife and coordinate remotely with project teams in our satellite offices (Whitehorse and Ottawa). In total, we are a team of about 25, including architects, engineers, interior designers, and support staff.
