Description

The Family Programs Coordinator works with a team to design and implement positive and engaging programs for families in Yellowknife with children prenatal to 5 years.  

Current programs include cooking and food programs, craft and creative programs, educational programs for parents, and opportunities for social connection and interpersonal engagement.  

The successful candidate will be familiar with the needs of children and their families from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. The successful candidate will run current programs as well as research, design, and run new programs to expand the family program based on identified needs and evidence-based research.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and deliver daily, weekly, or monthly programs as needed that respond to the mandate and objectives of funders and at the guidance of the director.  
  • Funding includes the Healthy Children Initiative, Healthy Together, Prenatal Nutrition Program (PNP), and NWT Literacy. 
  • Collaborate with other services and programs in the NWT to build positive working relationships to deliver comprehensive programming to a larger base of participants.  
  • Maintain and strengthen current professional relationships such as those with NWT literacy center and the Healthy Families program.  
  • Invite feedback from program participants. Implement feedback as appropriate into program design and workflow processes.  
  • Use current child development trends and research to inform program activities and focus learning outcomes.  
  • Advertise the program to the community services at large to recruit new involvement from community members inline with program mandate (prenatal -age 5) 
  • Attend and pursue training and professional development inline with program and professional knowledge requirements.  

Qualifications

Skills and abilities 

  • Understanding of the northern culture and diversity  
  • Knowledge/experience with child development theories and practices 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including Social Media communication (Facebook) 
  • Strategic decision making 
  • Creative problem solving and able to adapt to changing circumstances (evening hours, various environments including in office and outdoors) 
  • Effective use of time and shows initiative, self starter. 
  • Able to work alone and within a team. 
  • Able to work under pressure in a fast paced and quick changing environment. 
  • Able to meet physical demands of the job (setting up tables, lifting boxes, sitting on floor) 
  • Able to handle the mental and sensory demands associated with young children (loud noises, demand for attention, etc) 

 

Relevant training and knowledge 

  • Facilitation training and experience 
  • Experience with/ knowledge of young children (0-5) 
  • Able to work with others, able to take and give direction effectively 
  • Food safety training 
  • CPR and First Aid training 

Requirements for successful applicants 

  • Minimum age 19* 
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in (Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred) and a minimum of 1-year experience. 
  • Satisfactory criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector search, completed by the RCMP* 
  • Up-to-date immunizations* 
  • Tuberculosis screening* 
  • Valid NWT Driver’s License  

*required by the NWT Child Day Care Standards Regulations
