Description

Reporting to Operations Manager, The Youth In Transition (YIT) Navigator is responsible for assisting young people transitioning into adulthood and independence. The Navigator will specialize in one of the 4 major areas of support:

1. Mental Health and Addictions, 2. Housing and Tenancy Supports, 3. Practical Supports and Life Skills, and 4. Employment and Training Supports.

The Navigator, YiT  works to promote optimum health and wellbeing of youth with the end goal of preventing, reducing and ending their experience of homelessness. The Navigator will utilize a case management approach and evaluation techniques to develop and implement therapeutic treatment plans and will work alongside other staff and community services to support and engage in prevention programs. The Navigator will also assess and provide direct intervention or referral to appropriate service providers/programs where appropriate, for youth.

The Navigator, YiT will work with a team of  Navigators responsible for program areas including:

1. Mental Health and Addictions

2. Housing and Tenancy Supports

3. Practical Supports and Life Skills

4. Employment and Training Supports.

The Navigator will 40 hours per week on a 5 days on / 2 days off rotation.

Duties

The Navigator, YIT will assists youth to connect with supports and other resources in their communities. The program works from a strength-based youth driven framework. The program is voluntary and based on whether the young person feels they need further support.

SideDoor supports practice through a harm reduction and trauma informed lens, placing priority on participant, safety, choice and control. All SideDoor programs support participant empowerment and skill development

Qualifications

Post-secondary training in a credited Addictions and/or Mental Health, Child and Youth, Social Work or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education. Knowledge of Housing First for Youth (including housing and support systems for youth) is an asset.

Minimum three (3) years experience working with high needs/vulnerable youth, particularly homeless youth.

Up-to-date immunizations, CPR C and First Aid, and a criminal record check are mandatory.

Drop-In Centre provides a safe alternative to Yellowknife streets including practical supports and life skills: meal served at 6pm, recreation, cultural and social supports, etc.
