Supervisor: Associate Director of Programs and Operations

Hours: Monday - Friday 10:30 am - 1:00 pm (12.5 hours / week)

Term Position: May 3 2021 - December 31 2021

 

The SideDoor (rebranding to Home Base YK) Ministries is hiring a Youth Centre Cook - this is a new position that will be based out of the Hope’s Haven building in downtown Yellowknife. The cook will be working in a commercial kitchen and be in charge of making lunches and preparing dinner for youth who live at Hope’s Haven, as well as for youth who attend the Resource Centre (rebranding to the Youth Centre). Meals must be made for an average of 15 youth to eat. This position is a 8 month term position with the potential for extending if funding is secured.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare lunch for youth living at Hope’s Haven in a timely and consistent manner
  • Prepare lunch to be delivered to youth at the Youth Centre from Tuesday - Friday
  • Prepare (setting out ingredients and recipe for evening staff) for dinner which will be served by Hope’s Haven staff at 5 pm
  • Engage with staff and youth and develop positive relationships with those in the building
  • Clean kitchen and workspace after meal-making
  • Determine a weekly menu and ensure all youth’s dietary needs are being met
  • Determine food and supply needs and work cooperatively with supervisor to order food when supplies are low
  • Inspect food products and supplies as needed, make sure all food is labeled with expiry dates
  • Check food before it is served to youth, check temperatures to make sure it is safe
  • Control and minimize waste
  • Comply with outlined safety regulations and procedures in the kitchen
  • Provide encouragement, guidance, and instructions to youth and Hope’s Haven staff who will occasionally help with meal making (which is important for youth to learn these life skills)
  • Follow all guidelines based on the current COVID-19 safety guidelines
  • Complete food shopping and/or creating grocery shopping list

Qualifications

  • Experience making food for groups of 15+
  • Ability to create and follow a menu for the week
  • 2-3 years food service or restaurant experience an asset
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds
  • Comfortable standing, stopping, squatting, twisting, and moving frequently
  • Ability to work alone in a kitchen or with support from Hope’s Haven staff / youth
  • Familiarity with general kitchen equipment and appliances
  • Strong working knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, safety, and sanitation practices
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow recipes
