Description

Role Summary

Home Base Yellowknife is seeking a dedicated Youth Recreation Coordinator (YRC) to develop, coordinate, and implement recreation programs for youth who access any of the programs and services at Home Base Yellowknife. This is a 17-month term position running from November 1 2021 - March 31 2023, with possibility of extension. The YRC supports youth ages 12 – 24 to engage in various recreational activities throughout Yellowknife. The YRC will regularly work with other program coordinators at Home Base Yellowknife, and will regularly network and coordinate with community partners to offer programming. This is a new program, so Home Base Yellowknife is looking for someone who is innovative, creative, energetic, and ready to work with the team at Home Base Yellowknife to get this program started!

Responsibilities

  • Create a schedule one month in advance and post details for youth - recreational activities can include but are not limited to sports, working out at a fitness centre, movie nights, camping trips, day trips, attending community events, workshops, arts and crafts, friendly competitions, games nights
  • Work with program coordinators and other staff at Home Base Yellowknife to create and schedule recreational programming for youth daily
  • Create and maintain relationships with community partners (such as the City of Yellowknife, sport clubs, local businesses, Indigenous community groups, etc.), for the purpose of working together to offer recreational programming to youth
  • Identify youth needs and interests, assesses program responsiveness to these interests, and initiates new programming elements, which may include partnerships with other community-based organizations
  • Performs program pre-planning duties for assigned programs and activities to include written projections of costs and fees. Received pre-approval from supervisor for expenses, and analyze and make reports of post-program budgetary outcomes
  • Publicizes recreation programs by creating, producing, and distributing printed materials, and updating Home Base YK social media
  • Directly support youth between the ages of 12 and 24 in recreational activities
  • Provide support that is normalizing, individualized and respectful to the youth, and motivate youth to be engaged in the programs
  • Identify resources and services that are congruent with the youth’s overall service and transition plan
  • Through recreational activities, assist youth in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes
  • Assist youth to increase their capacity for autonomy and independent decision-making and problem solving
  • Assist youth to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives, and help them to develop insight to facilitate self-awareness and discovery
  • Ensure the environment is a safe space for all that attend including 2SLGBTQQIPAA+ and Indigneous individuals
  • Ensure the cultural and spiritual beliefs of all youth are supported
  • Any other duties as instructed by your supervisor
  • Uphold the Youth Recreation Program core values of: Fun, Safety, Teamwork, Confidence, Education, Honesty, Integrity, and Respect for others

Supervision

  • Supervise youth that are attending groups or individually
  • Provide supervision that is appropriate for the youth’s developmental age

Crisis Management

  • Utilize ethical and safe behavior management techniques to encourage awareness and acceptance of range of tolerable behavior
  • Intervene and practice good conflict resolution strategies with individuals and in group settings
  • Ensure safety risks are identified and the appropriate intervention is applied
  • Assess, evaluate and plan to prevent crisis situations whenever possible

Participation in Teamwork

  • Actively support the mission, vision and goals of Home Base Yellowknife
  • Work collaboratively with other staff within the organization
  • Actively participate in team meetings, professional development activities, staff retreat and other organization activities

Reporting

  • Ensure appropriate documents are signed before commencing work with youth including confidentiality forms, release of information forms, and attendance
  • Submit statistics, assessments and reports regularly to supervisor
  • Ensure a safe filing system for confidential documents

Qualifications

Background

  • Some education such as a college or university degree in education, social work, youth work, community work or equivalent work experience
  • 1+ years previous work experience in which the duties and tasks were similar (coordinating programming / planning or running sports / recreation programs)
  • Speak and write in English

  • Strong communication skills necessary to confidently communicate with youth, coworkers, supervisors, people in the community, professional people, law enforcement, government workers, court workers, education workers, etc.
  • Experiencing working with youth who have mental health challenges, and youth who are experiencing addictions to drugs and/or alcohol
  • Experiencing working with youth, youth who are experiencing homelessness, youth who have experienced varying levels of trauma, and youth with disability(ies)
  • An understanding of homelessness in Canada, homelessness interventions, and factors that lead to homelessness
  • An understanding of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and various forms of descrimination
  • An understanding of the history of Northwest Territories including impacts of colonization and residential schools
  • Prioritize cultural safety and cultural humility
  • Basic computer skills, the ability to read and write, and navigate software including Microsoft Word and Google Drive for administrative purposes
  • Experience writing case notes, filling out forms, and maintaining organized statistics
  • Ability to collaborate well with others
  • Ability to respond with empathy
  • Confidence in crisis and emergency situations
  • Organizational skills, ability to multitask
  • Skills to manage conflicts between individuals and groups
  • High level of adaptability
  • Ability to provide guidance to coworkers regarding best practices
